This is where the Battle of the Marne is said to have started!
From September 5 to September 12, 1914, the Battle of the Marne pitted the German army against the French army and the British Expeditionary Corps.
It covered a front of just over 200 km, from Meaux to Verdun. It halted the German advance. It was a decisive victory for the French army and its British allies, who thus thwarted the Schlieffen plan.
At 12.30pm on 5 September 1914, the German army positioned between Saint-Soupplets and Monthyon, seeing French troops emerging from the plain, decided to engage in combat.
The first cannon shot was fired from the Monthyon heights. A commemorative stele was inaugurated on September 12, 1976 at the top of the hill to commemorate this event.
